  1. Shorthand is an abbreviated symbolic writing method that increases speed and brevity of writing as compared to longhand, a more common method of writing a language. The process of writing in shorthand is called stenography, from the Greek stenos (narrow) and graphein (to write).

  2. Shorthand means writing by hand using various symbols to write quickly. And typing is to use typewriter or keyboard to write full sentences. In those days, a typing speed of anywhere from 35 to 45 words per minute (corrected) would be considered basic minimum. … A good typist would be around 50-60 words per minute.

  3. Shorthand is a key employability skill for Journalists. Many potential employers will not consider applications for a job in Journalism unless you have 100wpm shorthand. It is essential for the speedy and accurate recording of interviews, court and council proceedings, as well as general newsgathering.

  4. Shorthand is a totally different way of writing that enables the student to progress, often to very high speeds, if they so desire. Anyone who embarks on learning shorthand should always aim for a speed of at least 60-80 words per minute, as this is adequate for most business purposes today.

  5. Both are same. Steno typist means steno cum typist, whereas Stenographer is only an Assistant officially but will be used for typing also. Technically there’s no difference.

  6. The 17th century produced four important inventors of shorthand systems: John Willis, who is considered to be the father of modern shorthand; Thomas Shelton, whose system was used by Samuel Pepys to write his famous diary; Jeremiah Rich, who popularized the art by publishing not only his system but also the Psalms
